Proportions

Acrylic on canvas, 2022

After standing back to look at this piece, I noticed some of the proportions were off. I was about to modify the piece but then I stopped myself. So some of the proportions are not perfect ... and? Isn't that what art is all about? The imperfections and the confusion?

There is a sense of beauty in the imperfections, it challenges our perception of what beauty is "supposed" to be. Any imperfections can cause us as humans to criticize, judge, and put others down. This very well could be a product of our society and the constant pressure of fitting in. Why do we have to conform to these standards? So what if some of the proportions are off? It could be unsettling that certain parts of this painting do not necessarily portray reality, but that is the point. Combating the idea that us as humans have to “perfect” or fulfill this false sense of beauty.

In current times, social media fills most of the public’s attention. Between posts of models on Instagram to the advertisements we see for companies, there is a standard of beauty put in place. A standard that is unrealistic and creates insecurities within all of us. It causes us to believe in this false sense of beauty and strips us of our confidence.
